Black Mentorship in Technology

BlackMINT is dedicated to increasing Black representation in the technology workforce. Black people are 3.5% of the Canadian population but make up only 2.6% of the tech workforce, indexing lower than any other ethnicity in Canada. The demand for tech professionals is increasing, and Black tech professionals make up a sector of this industry that is far too small.

BlackMINT champions diversity in the technology industry by empowering Black youth with the tools to develop professionally, build connections and stay inspired throughout their academic careers. Our mission is to mentor Black youth, provide them with practical skills, career advice, and the help that they need to become confident, career-focused leaders in technology.

Now, more businesses are pursuing a diverse workforce because a diverse workforce brings varied perspectives. Different experiences help businesses make better-informed decisions, increase revenue, and lead to higher retention rates.

Mentorship Opportunities with BlackMINT

We offer a variety of ways for youth to benefit from BlackMINT. Our Rising Star Program, in partnership with Athlete Tech Group and RBC FutureLaunch, is an exciting, and fully virtual mentorship program where Black students will learn skills to prepare them for tech careers. Students will gain access to industry experts, who will guide and support you through modules, workshops and interactive sessions with other students. At the end of the program, students will have a chance for a scholarship.

To sign up for our mentorship program, fill out the form that will provide us with the information needed to match students with the right mentor. We look for potential mentor opinions based on personality fit and technical acumen. Together, parents and students can decide on the idea mentor, and then the mentorship program can begin.

It is important for Black youth to consider pursuing a career in technology because this is a field that is, and will continue to be in high demand in the future. The tech field is diverse and exciting, with a multitude of career avenues to explore. Whether it is programming, UX design, data science, marketing, or one of the many other paths, students can explore their passion in a field that is intellectually rewarding, challenging and exciting.

At BlackMINT, we always place the needs of the student first. We see phenomenal value in serving as a resource to Black youth by contributing to the advancement of Black youth in technology related fields, promoting meaningful dialogue and providing services and resources that drive measurable outcomes to overcome the systemic imbalances.
